On-Site Programs

About Our On-Site Programs

Our residential housing programs provide individuals and families with housing and supportive services after leaving the New York City shelter system and other institutions. We also offer affordable housing for low-income individuals from the community.

Referral through the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) or New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is required for most on-site housing programs. Individuals from the community seeking affordable housing can contact BCHS directly.

Family Shelter

Our family shelter provides short-term housing for mothers with children in a safe and secure environment. Families have access to a wide range of services, including case management, mental health counseling, support groups for domestic violence survivors, vocational training, and more to help them reclaim independence and find stable permanent housing.

The dedicated staff in our family shelter work with the mothers and children to find employment and stable housing in the community. To help families transition into permanent housing, our Fresh Start initiative provides enhanced clinical support to help families that have survived domestic violence heal from trauma, while also providing care for mothers who are suffering from a mental illness. Participants in this program can continue to receive help from BCHS for up to one year after moving onto permanent housing from the shelter. Program location: Brooklyn Gardens.

Transitional Supportive Housing

Transitional supportive housing serves single adults with severe mental illness. Often, this is the first step back into community living for individuals who have experienced long-term psychiatric hospitalization.

To ensure a smooth transition, these clients receive case management, mental health counseling, medication management, daily living skills training, substance abuse services, nursing services, clinically based recreational activities, and the development of socialization and self-advocacy skills. Our case managers work closely with clients, meeting with them weekly at a minimum to ensure their health needs are met and clients are learning skills to work towards greater independence. Program location: Brooklyn Gardens.

Permanent Supportive Housing

Permanent supportive housing provides affordable housing with support services to formerly homeless and housing-vulnerable individuals to strengthen their independence and support underlying mental health and/or substance abuse issues.

Residents include veterans, senior citizens, youth aging out of foster care, individuals returning to the community after a period of incarceration, and people who have moved on from temporary or transitional housing. They hold leases like traditional rental housing, where residents pay rent and enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as any other tenant and have access to therapeutic services. Program locations: Brooklyn Gardens and Navy Green.

Affordable Housing

Many of our buildings across Brooklyn include affordable housing units to provide housing access for low-income households. Rent for these units is capped at 30% of their annual income. With our new developments, we will expand our supply of affordable housing in the community. For more information on our affordable housing units, please contact Aurora Evans or Curdy Edwards. Program location: Brooklyn Gardens and Navy Green.
