BCHS is working to create new housing in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, as part of a team with Love Fellowship Church and Alembic Community Development. This new development will include 243 units of affordable housing, with 71 units set aside for formerly homeless families where the head of household has a mental illness and is set to open in winter 2022. This effort will transform a large vacant lot on the border of East New York and Brownsville; the building will also contain retail and commercial space, while the team will work with the local community to spur economic development in the area.
There is currently very little permanent supportive housing in New York City for families coping with mental illness, and BCHS is excited to expand the services and options available for this population in addition to creating urgently needed affordable and supportive housing for the community. Stay tuned for updates as the development progresses.
